Study Permit Extension
Canada Express Entry Visa Program
Studying in Canada is a dream of many international students due to its world-class education at an affordable cost. Students enrolled in educational institutions in Canada are issued a study permit with a designated validity period. Students who require additional time to complete their studies must apply for a study permit extension. Extending your study permit in Canada allows you to continue your education or remain in Canada while waiting for a decision on a new work or study application. It ensures your legal status remains intact while upholding your option to access benefits such as Canadian healthcare and the ability to work on or off campus.
When Should you Apply for an Extension of your Study Permit?
Situation 1: Your study permit is expiring soon, and you want to continue studying in Canada
If you want to continue studying beyond the expiry of your study permit, then you must apply for an extension at least 30 days before your current permit expires. You can also apply even earlier than this, allowing enough processing time. Before applying for an extension, ensure your passport is still valid, as you can’t extend your study permit beyond your passport’s expiry date.
Situation 2: Your study permit has already expired, and you want to continue studying in Canada
If your study permit has already expired and you have not applied for an extension within its validity period. In that case, you can apply for “Restoration of Status” in Canada, which allows you up to 90 days to restore your status. However, during the restoration period, you’re not allowed to continue your studies or work.
